Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that people who discontinue new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People using these medications need to be informed of the risk of rapid weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally have a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the jabs explains the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Users who have discontinued the jabs report a powerful return of appetite.

"It felt as if something flipping and you're instantly ravenous," described a patient.

This challenge is worsened if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts emphasize that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural changes.
