2K Hires Popular Battle Royale Lead to Revitalize Challenged Hero Shooter Ambitious Title
2K Games has appointed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to direct the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently developing the forthcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as this innovative game.
Management Change Comes After Poor Response
Brinkman takes on the role of studio head at 31st Union following the departure of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' underwhelming early showing last fall.
On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer informed employees about this organizational change through an internal memo, which emphasized that playtesting had revealed the necessity for a distinct vision.
The president noted that the developers is now overhauling the project with a revised approach, aiming to better meet player expectations.
A Pattern of Strategic Hires
This announcement follows a comparable move taken by the publisher in August, when they hired an industry veteran from the Diablo team to assist with the beloved franchise development group.
Below is the entire content from the president's memo:
Hello Everyone—
I understand you all just completed your town hall - I hope you’re as thrilled as I am with the recent updates. Previously I shared you all a note, I stated the following: “I am confident in this group. You all are some of the most dedicated and innovative designers we have had the chance to work with - and we’re excited for that relationship to persist.”
Through your commitment and adaptability, especially over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.
The player input from last autumn’s the game playtest was revealing. It validated the promise of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had work to do. It highlighted the necessity for a clearer identity.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve come. You accepted the input to consideration and reimagined the title with a revitalized direction - one that’s positioned to fulfill its potential to our players.
Our confidence in this project strengthens every day. To further the incredible advancement you’ve made, I am thrilled to announce Ben Brinkman as the incoming Lead of the team. Following some time of talks, he starts with us on Monday, October 20.
His leadership and experience in the competitive gaming field is extensive, having spent the recent years producing and leading some of the most well-known series in the industry, such as Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, Apex Legends.
Let’s together in receiving him next week. We are all eager to persist seeing the development of Project ETHOS in the weeks to follow.
The President
Experience of the New Head
Brinkman presently holds the position of executive producer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. Brinkman earlier was employed at Treyarch and Activision in multiple production roles on the Call of Duty games, and, earlier in his career, had assignments at other industry leaders.
Game Details and Concept
Project Ethos was revealed in last year together with a early access event. At the time, the developers presented the title as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an exciting advancement on the category."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in real-time to suit your personal playstyle," the game's pitch explains. "Face the opponents with fresh skills, risks, and obstacles that shift every round. Will you leave securely with your collected items? Or go big, risk it all, and trust your squad can earn top ranking? The choice is yours."
The game has not yet received an announced launch window or supported systems, but players can look forward to further news as production progresses.
